DONA ANA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO

Dog Park Working Group

Update: November 30, 2007
We are currently in the "construction" phase of the park with an expected completion date of June 2008. We are seeking sponsors for landscaping, shade trees, benches, ground cover (rock and grass), fencing, drinking fountains, and cement work. All may be tax deductible (must consult with your individual tax advisors) as the city will provide documentation regarding your sponsorships.

We will also be offering "Rainbow Bridge" opportunities where the public can purchase cement paw prints in memory of a beloved pet. The funds donated will serve to purchase equipment for the "Agility" area of the dog park.

Update: August 5, 2007
As of the July 24 Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Meeting (it took three months to get a quorum so they could vote on a site recommendation) the Board has made the recommendation that we were hoping for
1) 1st preference site is the Hadley Recreation Complex (behind Meerscheidt Center adjacent to LCPD's training facility).
2) 2nd preference site is the Legends West park (not constructed yet as a park but promised by Mr. Cupid, the developer).

The Dog Park Coalition is scheduled to go before the City Council on Monday, August 20, at 1 p.m. (City Hall Council Chambers) to request that they accept the P&R Board's recommendation for the Hadley site. The city's Facility Director and his Parks & Rec Mgr will be presenting the Advisory Board's recommendation.

The Dog Park Coalition will follow with our presentation explaining why the Hadley site is our preferred site. Our speakers will include our legislative sponsors addressing the city council. We need you to demonstrate your support for this park and the site at Hadley by showing up for this City Council meeting.

PLEASE SHOW UP AND PASS THE WORD AROUND. We have literature and flyers if you can help with getting the word out to the community of dog lovers.

Thank you, Ellen

Good News
Posted April 25, 2007

Congratulations to all the Dog Park Supporters! We have received sufficient funding to proceed with the creation of the first A.R.F. park for the city of Las Cruces. We have already had one meeting with the city since being awarded our funding and want to share all this information with you!

We are going to have a meeting for Dog Park supporters on Saturday, April 28th from 9:00 a.m. until no later than noon at Steinborn's GMAC Realty offices at 141 Roadrunner Parkway.

We encourage participation and will be taking all constructive comments on what rules, guidelines, amenities, etc. you would prefer in this first of hopefully many more "off leash" A.R.F. parks here in Las Cruces.

It is imperative that you come and share your concerns and ideas. They will all be conveyed on your behalf to the City Landscape Architect(Kathy Mathews)whom we will be meeting with to give input for the master plan as the process moves through the required channels.

It is personally important to me that everyone who has any interest in this park have a voice in its design.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday morning! Call me with any questions or concerns.

The following information was posted when the Dog Park Working Group was first formed in 2005.

The PVA working group for a Dog Park in Las Cruces will be establishing a park with a perimeter confinement fence for “off leash” exercise and play. The location, design, and size of the park will be negotiated between the City Council and our PVA working group supporters. We will attempt to isolate several possible park sites within the city and after we have all our facts, costs, and projections evaluated, we will present our entire proposal with options to the City Council. We have secured the full support of our local Humane Society and need volunteers to solicit more supporters from our community both in the business (veterinarians especially) and private sectors. A “dog park” along with its “Dog Park Bulletin Board” contributes to the dissemination of spay/neuter and vaccination information, pet socialization, provides a place for the entire family to freely enjoy their pets, including obedience, agility, fly ball, puppy socialization, and is a wonderful educational tool for our children.

Ellen Mangan has secured a conditional commitment to provide a 4 plus acre site from the City Facility Manager and his Parks & Rec Director and has begun to assemble local business and individual supporters.
