BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY

I. Planning Our Community and Its Neighborhoods

Foster distinctive, attractive, live/work/play neighborhoods that have a strong sense of place, feature a mix of land uses, offer a wide range of housing opportunities, provide a balance of residential and employment choices.

II. Preserving Existing Neighborhoods, Farmland, Parks, Open Space, Recreational Areas, Natural Beauty, Energy Resources, and the Environment

Bolster local economies and improve our community’s quality of life by utilizing the resources that existing neighborhoods have to offer; direct some new development toward areas already served by infrastructure in order to conserve open space and irreplaceable natural resources on the urban fringe; develop polices that encourage energy conservation and the use of renewable sources of energy.

III. Creating Safe, Walkable, Multi-Modal Communities

Provide a pleasant, safe environment that offers the opportunity to complete daily tasks close to neighborhoods

IV. Encouraging Community and Stakeholder Collaboration in Planning and Development Decisions

Involve a full range of stakeholders, including both residents and the private sector, to ensure that planning and development processes accurately reflect local needs and values and respond to the community’s own sense of how and where it wants to grow.

V. Fostering Economic Development and Quality of Life

Integrate Smart Growth and economic development in order to bolster quality of life through increased tax revenue, more jobs, higher income levels, neighborhood revitalization, business growth, and other indicators of economic success.
