2006 Annual Report

In its second year, the PVA hosted 10 general meetings, including a campaign fair.

As of the end of 2006, there were 14 working groups listed on our Web site, some currently more active than others.

We want to especially recognize the following accomplishments:

  • The Scholarship Group, headed by Bri Hines. The group collected $680 and has funded a $150 scholarship and has $530 currently in the scholarship fund.

  • The Elections and Securing the Vote group, headed by Peter Ossorio. Peter reports that during early voting (October 10 to November 4) Democrats fielded challengers and watchers before the Republicans. Although we had coverage for only about 15 percent of the time during the early period, 13 people periodically spot-checked all 5 early voting locations. On November 7 approximately 113 people served as Democratic watchers or challengers for anywhere from 2 hours to all day at approximately 88 precincts (some precincts were co-located with others). This does not include 8 to12 people who originally were trained as watchers and challengers but who were asked to serve as poll workers on election day.

  • The Microcredit Banking Group, headed by Connie Richardson. This group  collected $907 by year’s end.

  • The Legislative Response Team of approximately 65 people, headed by Jim R. Moore. The team had a positive progressive influence on state legislation in the annual session.

  • The 5 Unified Actions that were coordinated by Chris Hines. An average of  76 people participated in each action.

  • PVA meetings provided a forum for political candidates to share their views on issues.

  • PVAers provided the bulk of the volunteer staff and contributed significant money to the election campaigns of a number of progressive candidates—at local, state, and federal levels--several of whom were victorious.

  • Eleven other associated organizations actively use our PVA meetings to inform us of their activities and to garner support for theirs.

The PVA began 2006 with a cash balance of $294.11 and ended the year with a cash balance (excluding scholarship funds) of $235.
