DONA ANA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO

Progressive Voter Alliance Executive Committee Annual Report

September 2005

Who we are: The Progressive Voter Alliance is an inclusive coalition of voters who actively support social and economic justice, political equality, and environmental stewardship.

What we currently consist of:

  • a meeting on the 4th Thursday of each month from 7-9 pm
  • a county-wide data base of progressive activists numbering approximately 700 people
  • working groups involved in various activities, which seek members/ involvement from larger PVA group
  • a web page for PVA information and for access by interested people, where it’s possible to:
    • register for PVA mailing list and Unified Action
    • find out about/get involved with working groups
    • find out about/get involved with other progressive organizations
    • get a recap of the most recent meeting
    • find out about upcoming events in the community
  • an Executive Committee charged with:
    • maintaining the overall organization
    • setting the larger meeting’s agenda
    • selection of each month’s Unified Action
    • managing and approving utilization of the PVA data base
    • assessing the progress and effectiveness of PVA-related activities, and making changes when required
  • a Unified Action: one specific action per month (e.g. a call or letter) which
    • brings full force of PVA network to bear
    • is a clear achievement each month
    • allows working groups/allied organizations to support one another on key issues

Current working principles:

  • the PVA provides a network for progressives in Doña Ana County, whereby individuals can be recruited to diverse causes, and coordinate their actions with other like-minded people
  • working groups and other community organizations are the prime and autonomous initiators of action within the PVA, on the particular issues that interest them
  • the PVA doesn’t endorse candidates or specific positions on issues. Even our Unified Action is proposed by an autonomous group or person within the larger PVA alliance, approved as within the PVA’s area of interest by the Executive Committee, and presented to autonomous citizens who have agreed to act together within agreed-upon parameters
  • PVA working groups are formed, usually at PVA general meetings, whenever an individual identifies a concern and offers to serve as coordinator of a working group to address that concern
  • other community organizations may be listed under “other organizations” on the PVA website, whereby links describing their own activities can be accessed
  • the Executive Committee has the responsibility for editorial control of the website, and the ultimate determination for whether a PVA working group or community organization can appear there
  • the PVA tries to maintain the broadest and most inclusive coalition possible among progressive forces in the community
  • working groups which engage in direct electoral activity must, under terms of our 501(c)(4) status, seek their own organizational framework independent of the PVA. They can, however, appear under “Other Organizations” on the webpage
  • PVA meetings and activities are designed by the Executive Committee to promote the growth of an active, open, healthy, and effective progressive community in Doña Ana County
  • Use of the PVA data base is determined by the Executive Committee. Generally, its use is limited to PVA meeting announcements and recaps, unless another use is explicitly authorized by the Executive Committee. It can only be provided to political parties or candidates by explicit decision of the Executive Committee, and only at fair market value.
  • Working group leaders can have access to the PVA membership list for recruitment, on a person-by-person basis, for their projects, provided they agree not to incorporate the PVA list into their own data base, or do mass callings or emailings
  • The monthly PVA meeting is available for those who like it, and are strengthened by it, but we should expect people to drop in and out of the meetings while still enjoying the benefits of the PVA network
