Democratic Poll Worker Qualifications

Revised 20 August 2007

You are qualified to be a poll worker (which is formally called a member of the “precinct board”) in Doña Ana County if you

  • reside in Doña Ana County and in the legislative district where you vote;
  • are a registered Democrat;
  • can read and write English;
  • have the ability to carry out the functions of a poll worker with “acceptable skill and dispatch” (in other words you can do the job!);
  • sign the oath of office which is provided by the County Bureau of Elections;
  • attend training for your duties given by the Bureau of Elections (training generally consists of one or two sessions before a particular election of up to two hours; training is good for the calendar year in which it is taken); and
  • are certified as qualified by the County Clerk (after completing the training)

You may not be a poll worker if you

  • are a candidate for any office (federal, state, district or county)
  • are the spouse, parent, child, brother or sister of any candidate to be voted for at the election; or
  • are a sheriff, deputy sheriff, marshal, deputy marshal or state or municipal policeman

You can become a member of the precinct board by

  • being submitted on a list from the Party Chair to the County Clerk nominating you to serve in the precinct in which you reside; or
  • applying to the County Clerk (Bureau of Elections) and be placed on a standby list

Note: The Clerk’s office attempts to place workers in the precinct in which they reside--or at least within the representative district where they reside--but in the best interest of the election process, you may be assigned to work in any precinct in the county.

You will be expected to work from 6 a.m. on election day until released by the presiding judge after the polls close at 7 p.m. (usually around 8 p.m.) You will not be permitted to leave the polling place and must work the entire day.

Compensation is $125 for election judges and clerks; it is $150 to $175 for presiding judges.
